Personal Finance How to effectively trade options in a TFSA or any other account? Sep 25th, 7: Reply to Thread Reply. How to effectively trade options in a TFSA or any other account? I understand that trading options allow for significant leverage. Since the TFSA account is registered, I am only considering buying call options because I believe that for lot of securities, they are still closer to the bottom than they are to the top. Are option prices based solely on the underlying's volatility or does the VIX affect the individual option prices? TDW has the options analytics that show theoretical prices but they are so far off from where the options are actually trading. I understand that volatility holds the key to most options trade as higher volatility necessitate an increase in option prices. How does buying months before earnings release and selling options day before the release work? Has this been proven to be a money maker in the long run? I have read a book on options trading Volatility Edge in Options Trading and the author talks about having trading compare historical volatility to implied volatility priced into the options. Are there free tools haven't had time to learn how to use the Bloomberg options at the office that I can use to facilitate this research? If you have access to options Bloomberg then your best bet is trading use that. Check out the HVG historical volitility graph and HIVG historical implied volitility graph - usage would be [Ticker] [Equity key] HVG [or HIVG]; sample SU Equity HVG. A couple of PgDns should get you to the table used to build the graph. Check the top tfsa of the screen, I think you can drag the table to a spreadsheet and the do comparisons there. I don't think you can use puts or covered writes in a registered account anyway, so you're limited to the buying of calls. I've traded options in registered accounts. You can buy tfsa and puts. You can write covered calls as well. Still though, if you're buying calls a long way out, remember you are often paying a premium, and as you get closer to expiration, the premium drops. The devotee thus avoids the slow, evolutionary monitors of egoistic actions, good and bad, of common life, cumbrous and snail-like to the eagle hearts.
